ID=29367435A change.org petition that seeks to "Ban Arizona State University from using Satan as its mascot" has gotten hundreds of people to sign in support.

Change.org allows anyone to create an online petition to try to influence change.

This petition, directed toward the Arizona Board of Regents, states:

"Arizona State University calls itself the 'Sun Devils'. This is an inappropriate and offensive nickname to all good, non devil worshippers in the world.

"Satan is a symbol of evil. A supposed institution of higher learning should not be able to use this symbol to represent iself [sic]. The 'Sun Devil' mascot scares children and causes nightmares.

"The world will be a better place when all images of Satan, including the 'Sun Devil' mascot and symbol are eliminated."

The petition's poster is identified as Josh Miller of Phoenix. Miller seems to be no stranger to change.org or anti-ASU petitions.

Miller has since closed his petition. A short while after we published this story, he replaced the text on the change.org page to:

"

This was a joke.

"It is a sad commentary that people can't take a joke.

"The UofA administration caved to a random petition that someone started to ban the Haka before football games, a tradition that started in 2009.

"This petition was an effort to make the most asinine petition I could think of and see how much steam it could pick up. When this hit local media, I knew it was time to take it down.

"If you got the joke, good for you."

There has been no comment yet from Sparky, the Sun Devils mascot.
