Homes flooded after Tempe water main breaks

At least two homes were flooded after a water main broke early Wednesday morning near Hardy and University Dr.

TEMPE, Ariz. — At least two homes were flooded after a water main broke overnight near Hardy and University Dr. in Tempe.

The water main broke around 2 a.m., homeowners said, sending water through the streets and into at least two homes near the break.

“I got up at 5:30 this morning put my foot on the floor and it was wet," Neil Sundberg said.

Sundberg's house got the brunt of the water. The water line on his exterior wall is about 8 inches off the ground.

Cleanup crews spent the day ripping out his wood flooring and carpeting.

“The house got wet, every floor in the house got wet," he said. "Every floor."

His next-door neighbor, Neil Harrison, caught the rising water on his doorbell camera.

By the time someone knocked on his door to warn him, there was little he could do to stop the water coming in.

“The water creeped under the floorboards, so a bunch of the carpet’s ruined," Harrison said.

A Tempe spokesperson said four homes lost their water when the pipe broke, but that crews were working to get it restored. The spokesperson also said the city was working with homeowners on cleanup and remediation.

A portion of Hardy from 13th Street to Howe remained closed as of Wednesday afternoon.
