Homeowner shoots suspected burglar in Glendale, police say

Glendale police said the incident happened Thursday afternoon at a home near 43rd and Northern avenues.

GLENDALE, Ariz. — A suspected burglar is in the hospital after being shot while attempting to burglarize a home in Glendale, police said.

Glendale police said the incident happened Thursday afternoon at a home near 43rd and Northern avenues.

Majhor Barnes, the homeowner, said his family moved into the home within the past year.

"God is good and I’m glad I was here to protect my family,” Barnes said.

Barnes said he was approaching his house when he spotted the suspect trying to get inside. When Barnes confronted the suspect, he said the man started coming after him with a knife and shot him.

"He tried to stab me a couple of times and I defended myself,” Barnes said.

The whole situation all unfolded in less than a minute.

Police said the suspect was transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Authorities said he may face aggravated assault and burglary charges once released.

Barnes is thankful to be alive and that his family is okay.

“My family is a little on edge because of the whole situation,” he said.

This isn't the first encounter Barnes had with the suspect he claims. Early Wednesday morning he said the same man broke into his garage and stole items from inside including a bike.

Glendale police said this is an active investigation and information is subject to change.
