Buckeye homeowner shoots man in backyard, police say

The homeowner told police that the man ignored commands to leave and walked toward him, at which time the homeowner fired a single shot.

Buckeye police received a call of shots fired near Watson and Yuma roads on Sunday Jan. 7.

BUCKEYE, Ariz. — A homeowner in Buckeye heard someone in his backyard and shot an unknown man, police said. The man who was shot is in critical condition. 

The Buckeye Police Department received a call of shots fired at home near Watson and Yuma roads. When officers arrived a man was seen walking out of the home with his hands up. Officers detained him, police said.

Officers searched the home where they found a man in the backyard bleeding from a gunshot wound to the chest. The man, who police say is in his early 20s, was transported to the hospital and is in critical condition, police said. 

The homeowner, a man in his 30s, told investigators he and his family were asleep when they heard the doorbell. He told police he grabbed a handgun and looked out the front window, but did not see anyone there.

The homeowner told police he heard noise coming from the back of the house, so he went to the back door and opened it to find an unknown man. The homeowner told police the man ignored commands to leave and walked toward the homeowner. The homeowner fired a single shot, hitting the man in the chest, police said.

Police did not release the name of the man who was shot or the homeowner. The police also did not release any further information regarding the incident.
