SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — For the second day in a row, a hiker was taken to the hospital in critical condition after suffering a heat-related illness.
The Scottsdale Fire Department told 12News they were called to the Gateway Loop Trail, just north of the intersection of Bell Road and Thompson Peak Parkway at about 11:10 a.m. on Sunday.
They found a 30-year-old woman who was dealing with severe heat exhaustion. She was taken off the trail using a big wheel and then taken to the hospital in critical condition.
This comes as the Valley saw record-breaking heat for the fifth straight day. According to the National Weather Service, Phoenix set a new high temperature for the date by hitting 108 degrees at 11:21 a.m. This broke the previous high temperature record of 107 degrees, which was set in 2003. Temperatures across the Valley are expected to reach anywhere from 109 to 113 degrees.
This comes just a day after a hiker was rescued from Piestewa Peak in Phoenix and hospitalized in critical condition with a heat-related illness, according to the Phoenix Fire Department.
The normal high temperature for Sept. 29 is 96 degrees, according to the NWS.
If you are planning on spending time outdoors on Sunday, make sure to know the signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.
Signs of heat exhaustion include dizziness, thirst, heavy sweating, nausea and weakness. If you think someone may be suffering from heat exhaustion, move them to a cool area, loosen their clothes and have them sip cool water.
Signs of heat stroke include those of heat exhaustion plus confusion and losing consciousness. If you think someone may be suffering from heat stroke, call 911 immediately, move the person to a cool area, loosen their clothes, remove all extra layers and cool them down with water or ice.
