GLENDALE, Ariz. — When chaos on the roadway ended with a car stranded in a nearby lake, one Good Samaritan was there to help.
On June 13, a driver swerved to avoid a crash at the intersection of 59th Avenue and Behrend Drive. The evasive maneuvers ended with their car crashing into a nearby man-made lake.
A video posted to X (formerly known as Twitter) by the Glendale Police Department showed Amy Magsamen wading out into the water to make sure that the 66-year-old driver was okay and to help get her back to shore.
"I had that lifeguard training. I know you don't dive into water that's unknown," Magsamen said in the video. "Keep your eyes on the victim, try to get her to stay calm. If she doesn't here's what I'm gonna do. If the car goes down here's what I'm gonna do. So it seemed logical."
Magsamen was driving in the area at the time and when she stopped to help, she saw she had to act quickly.
"The scary part was, the car was going down. It was sinking," she said in the video.
Fortunately, the woman was conscious and coherent but couldn't open the door because of the water pressure. With the driver's side window down, Magsamen was able to help her out and start bringing her to shore.
"I would encourage people to try something," Magsamen said of the moment. "Be willing to try and fail or succeed, but try something."
