Gilbert's Water Tower Plaza is getting a major upgrade

The town of Gilbert said one of the benefits of the project is to make the water tower plaza more water-wise.

GILBERT, Ariz. — A big project is taking shape in a popular East Valley downtown. The plaza surrounding the Gilbert water tower, which was built about 96 years ago, is getting some major upgrades.

The water tower has a history in the town dating back to 1927. It used to store water for firefighting and drinking water up until 1985. It is now a gathering place for residents with water features including a splash pad for families and more. But the area was due for an update.

A plan to update the tower and surrounding area is now underway to revitalize the iconic East Valley spot.

One of the benefits of the new upgrade project was to make the water tower plaza more water-wise, Gilbert officials said. This is happening as Valley cities continue to find solutions to save water in the ongoing drought.

Gilbert’s Parks Manager Kylie Sorensen said once the project turned into a renovation, discussions about saving water began.

During a recent public meeting, Sorensen said water conservation came up a lot in a community concerned with the future of water. Sorenson added that Gilbert took that into account and the plaza updates will use less water than a residential pool when construction is complete.

“We’re also using smart irrigation controllers and the smart irrigation controllers allow us to constantly monitor the water usage," Sorensen said. "So we’re able to water plants as needed. and not overuse water. A lot of the technology with the splash pad and the water wall and recycling water, we’re really able to use water wisely.”

Project construction started in early January and it’s expected to finish for the community to enjoy in the fall of 2024.

Other upgrades to the water tower plaza include a restroom on site, new infrastructure, a new splash pad, more shade and parallel parking, which Sorensen said is a safety feature.
