Gila River police officer hurt in West Valley crash

The crash happened near 63rd Avenue and Baseline Road in the West Valley. Police believe the other driver was drunk.

PHOENIX — A Gila River Police Department officer was involved in a serious crash early Thursday morning.

The crash happened near 63rd Avenue and Baseline Road in the West Valley. Baseline Road is currently closed between 67th Avenue and Loop 202 South Mountain. The freeway is not affected by the crash.

The officer's patrol vehicle was seen flipped upside down with its roof severely damaged. A second car was seen nearby with damage to its hood and engine.

The driver and passenger of that second vehicle ran away from the scene of the crash before Phoenix Police officers detained them, officials with the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office said.

The Gila River police officer was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

MCSO is handling the investigation and believes that alcohol impairment played a part in the crash.
