PHOENIX - One of the largest aircraft in the world is on a Sky Harbor runway Friday.
The Antonov 124-100 has landed.
It's a giant Russian cargo jet that is giant. I know I wrote "giant" twice -- that's because it is really, monstrously big and there are only so many words in English to describe such a very big thing.
If you look closely at the picture above, you can see a person standing in front of the front tire, which should give a good reference point for the size of this behemoth plane.
According to Sky Harbor public relations, the Antonov's 240-foot wingspan is larger than the C5 Galaxy, the U.S. Air Force's largest aircraft, by 18 feet.
The Antonov also measures 226 feet in length and can carry 864,000 pounds, almost 100,000 more pounds than the C5 Galaxy.
Sky Harbor officials said the plane was stopping off for gas on its trip back to Russia for Marana. No word on why it was in Arizona in the first place.
