Funeral services Monday for Georgie Goode

Community remembers Georgie Goode, school board member, civil rights leader, wife of former Vice Mayor Calvin Goode.
Georgie Goode, a longtime community activist who's lived in Phoenix since the early 1960s, has died.

The life of Georgie Goode will be celebrated during services Monday at 10:30 a.m. at Pilgrim Rest Baptist Church at 1401 E. Jefferson Street in Phoenix.

Goode, the wife of former Phoenix Vice Mayor Calvin Goode, died June 15. She was known in the community for her lifelong commitment to education, affordable housing, strong neighborhoods and being a mentor to young adults.Goode taught school in the Roosevelt School District for many years.

In her first run for public office, she ran and unseated a Phoenix Elementary School Board member. She also served a four-year term on the Phoenix Union High School Governing Board.

After teaching decades in the Roosevelt School District, Goode became an English instructor at Maricopa Technical College which later became Gateway Community College.

Goode earned a bachelor's degree from Spelman College and her master's degree from Atlanta University, Goode authored four books during her lifetime.

Goode leaves behind her husband and three sons.
