Fountain Hills suspect shot by MCSO identified, expected to survive

He called 911 asking to speak to a deputy, then threw rocks and approached the sergeant with a knife, according to the sheriff's office.

The Maricopa County Sheriff's Office has identified a suspect shot by a sergeant Monday night in Fountain Hills.

Ismail Hamed, 18, is expected to survive after a 12-year veteran of MCSO shot him Monday night.

A Wednesday release from the sheriff's office said that Hamed called 911 Monday afternoon saying he wanted to talk to a deputy at the MCSO substation at Fountain Hills city hall.

The sergeant went outside the substation just after 5:30 p.m. to meet Hamed, who began throwing rocks at him, then came towards him with a knife, according to MCSO.

Hamed ignored commands to drop the knife, so the sergeant shot him, MCSO said.

Monday's shooting was the first involving law enforcement so far in 2019 after a record-setting 2018.
