MESA, Ariz. - The cause of a fiery, deadly small-plane crash near Falcon Field remains under investigation Wednesday. It killed two people who were on board.
The plane came down in the middle of Greenfield Road between McDowell and McKellips Tuesday evening. The road was back open Wednesday morning, but there were still remnants from the crash in the area.
Mesa police say they got the call around 6:30 p.m. Tuesday. They say the plane took off in tandem with another plane.
Police believe the aircraft that crashed was a single-engine, AT-6, an older military-style trainer plane.
Mesa emergency crews responded, but the plane was too badly burned and it was too late for the people inside.
Mesa Police Department's spokesman Steve Berry says the plane landed right in the middle of a busy East Valley road as residents were coming home from work.
"[It's] a tragic situation," Berry said. "We're right in the middle of a major roadway here in Mesa and certainly, never to minimize the tragedy, but obviously you could imagine if this had say hit another carload of people or bus or something of that nature. It's an unfortunate situation for everyone involved."
Investigators still haven't named the people who were on board. 12 News was told the FAA and NTSB will be taking over the investigation.
