CORONADO, Calif. - Navy SEAL Charlie Keating IV, who was killed in action against ISIS in Iraq last week, was honored Friday in Coronado, where he was based.
Viewers around the world were able to watch as the Sacred Heart Catholic Church streamed the funeral service.
"He is dedication, commitment, leadership, toughness and courage," said Capt. Robert Clark, Keating's father-in-law.
The public was also invited to attend a procession around the city after the service around noon. Thousands lined Sixth Street to pay their respects.
Keating was posthumously promoted to chief petty officer before the memorial.
He went to Arcadia High School in Phoenix and graduated in 2004. Keating's friends and family call him a hero who loved serving his country.
"That's the bravest thing anyone can do is to lay down their lives for their country and their friends and family,” said William Lichtsinn, one of Keating's best friends.
Phoenix Mayor Greg Stanton declared May 13 Charles Keating IV Day in honor of the Valley native.
Keating was the third U.S. service member to be killed in combat in Iraq since U.S. forces returned there in 2014.
