Among the roughly 60 residents was Dani Nelson, whose family owns a barn with horses in the evacuation zone.
“Crap. This is serious," Nelson told 12News recalling her reaction to the overnight wake-up call ordering evacuations.
Her second barn located a few miles south of the evacuation zone has been used as a defacto shelter for other horses or livestock in the area. She said all the neighbors look out for one another in the area.
“Horse people are horse people, and will always support horse people. So it doesn't matter what kind of breed or discipline you're in, as soon as there's something like this, I mean, this is how a lot of people out in this area make their living. So they instantly are ready to go in, go above and beyond," Nelson said.
The Arizona Department of Forestry and Fire Management along with the Tonto National Forest are managing the fire at this time. The Boulder View Fire started around 2:30 p.m. on Thursday, June 27, approximately 4.5 miles east of Carefree, in North Scottsdale.
The fire was determined to be human-caused and is under investigation.
Evacuations are in place for residents from 136th Street to 144th Street to Dove Valley Road to the Tonto National Forest boundary.
Pre-evacuation notices are in place from 136th St to Box Bar Rd, Rio Verde Rd to Dove Valley.
