PHOENIX — The Environmental Protection Agency has released a proposal for the cleanup of a contaminated site in Phoenix, according to officials.
The agency is looking to hear from the public about the plan.

The site, known as the Motorola site, has contaminants in the groundwater, according to the agency.
It is located in central Phoenix within the boundaries of 52nd Street on the east, Palm Lane on the north, 7th Avenue on the west and Buckeye Road.
“This is a big step forward to protect groundwater and ensure a future supply of safe drinking water for the Phoenix community,” said EPA Director of Region 9 Superfund and Emergency Management Division Michael Montgomery.

It's one of several superfund sites in the Valley. These sites have been polluted with hazardous materials and require long-term cleanup.
The contamination was caused by industrial and commercial activities including dry cleaning, the manufacturing of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning equipment, railroad activities, the manufacturing of semiconductor manufacturing, and aerospace and jet engine design.
The main contaminants of concern, called Volatile Organic Compounds or VOCs, found at the Motorola site are trichloroethene (TCE), 1,4-dioxane, 1,1-dichloroethane (DCA), 1,2,4-trichlorobenzene, and naphthalene.
According to the EPA: "The proposed plan summarizes the risks of the contamination for human health and the environment and identifies the EPA’s preferred option for the cleanup of the contamination. It describes six cleanup options to remove contaminants that are unsafe to drink and gives the community an opportunity to review and submit comments on the EPA’s plan, including all six options."
The agency is seeking public input about the plan from now until Dec. 15.
A meeting allowing the public to discuss the proposal will be held on Nov. 14 at the Burton Barr Central Library in Nina Mason Pulliam Auditorium on the first floor. The address is 1221 N. Central Avenue in Phoenix. It will be from 5:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
