Electric scooter curfew ends in downtown Phoenix

Anyone using the scooters between midnight and 5 a.m. must take a reaction test in the app to reduce intoxicated riding.

PHOENIX — Starting Friday at midnight, the electric scooters in downtown Phoenix will be available 24/7. Previously, the Lime and Spin scooters were only available between 5 a.m. and midnight but the city is trying this new schedule as part of a six-month pilot program.

The city will collect data on the usage of scooters and bikes to determine whether to bring the curfew back.

The new schedule does come with some new safety features: Anyone using the scooters between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m. must take a reaction test in the vendor's app to reduce intoxicated riding.

Riding on an electric scooter while intoxicated can result in a DUI charge. Arizona is known for its strict DUI laws. The law goes beyond driving a car while drunk. If you’re impaired using any form of transportation that can be powered on its own, you can be arrested for DUI.

Boundaries for the scooters were also expanded in January to include areas south and east of downtown.
