First electric fire truck in Arizona unveiled Friday in Gilbert

The Pierce Volterra electric fire truck was unveiled Friday at the trucks push-in ceremony.

GILBERT, Ariz. — The first electric fire truck in Arizona was unveiled Friday in Gilbert.

Gilbert Fire & Rescue held a push-in ceremony for the Pierce Volterra electric fire truck on Friday, which is a traditional event that marks the start of an engine's service to its community.

"Gilbert Fire & Rescue is proud to be the first department in the state and one of only a handful in the country to deploy an electric-powered fire engine designed to improve health and safety for our crews and community," a statement from the department said.

The truck will reduce emissions, minimize fuel and produce less noise with no compromise on apparatus features, performance, functionality and safety, according to Pierce Manufacturing, the maker of the truck.

There are at least two other trucks in the nation like the one Gilbert Fire & Rescue now has: in Madison, Wisconsin, and Portland, Oregon, according to Pierce's website.
