East Valley homes evacuated due to garbage truck fire

Homes near the burning truck were evacuated, Mesa officials said.

MESA, Ariz. — Several homes near a garbage truck fire in Mesa have been evacuated, fire officials said.

On Wednesday morning near Southern Avenue and Horne, crews were called to the scene of the fire. According to officials, a city garbage truck caught on fire. 

Crews evacuated the immediate surrounding homes and worked to put out the fire within the truck. Fire officials added that it was a CNG vehicle and crews are letting the CNG burn while protecting exposures.

There was no immediate word on what caused the fire. We will add more information as it becomes available.
