MESA, Ariz. — A 22-year-old man is dead following a shooting at a McDonald's drive-thru in Mesa, police said.
Mesa police officers were called to the McDonald's at Country Club Drive and Southern Avenue for a possible shooting just after 3 a.m. on Jan. 13. When officers got to the scene, they found several people in the drive-thru area. A man who had been shot was on the ground, police said.
Officers administered first aid and the man was transported to the hospital, where he later died.
The deceased individual has been identified as Daniel Betker.
Detectives said there were two groups of people involved in a "verbal altercation" while in the drive-thru line that escalated into the shooting. Detectives managed to identify a potential suspect after interviewing several witnesses and reviewing surveillance footage.
Investigators have arrested 26-year-old Carlos Heard II for his alleged involvement in Betkar's death. A handgun was recovered from the suspect's vehicle, police said.
Heard is facing charges of second-degree murder, endangerment, and disorderly conduct.
