Downtown Phoenix restaurant suffers from reduced business during pandemic

Mrs. White's Golden Rule Cafe in downtown Phoenix, like many local restaurants, is relying on the community to help by ordering takeout during the pandemic.

PHOENIX — Mrs. White's Golden Rule Cafe has been a longtime downtown staple. For over 55 years, they've been serving up some of the area's best fried chicken and pork chops.

They've survived the construction of light rail, the 2008 economic crash and now they're facing their biggest threat yet – COVID 19.

Owner Larry White Sr. said that since downtown has shut down, it's been tough on business. His clientele during the daytime is mostly downtown workers.

Lately, he's been relying on the community to help by ordering takeout during the pandemic.

Customer and former Phoenix Suns basketball player Curtis Perry stopped by to pick up his order of fried chicken and pork chops. He's been coming to Golden Rule since 1970 and says it's family, and he wants to make sure that he's doing his best to support local businesses.

Kenneth Darden, a trucker from North Carolina, said he's been supporting Golden Rule for over five years and always stops in when traveling through Phoenix. He enjoys the home-cooked style meals and says to keep prayer first to make it through this difficult time.

As for Larry White Sr., he says he's keeping the business open during its usual business hours,10:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. every single day of the week.
