DOC: Order restored at Kingman prison after days of unrest

An additional 355 inmates will be transferred to other prisons.
Gov. Doug Ducey toured the damage from several days of rioting by inmates at the prison in Kingman.

State prison officials said guards and inmates at a privately run facility in Kingman are experiencing their first night of peace in days.

Andrew Wilder, an Arizona Department of Corrections spokesman, said an additional 355 inmates were being moved to other facilities to keep the peace in tact and due to extensive damage in the prison that's about 15 miles south of Kingman.

Wilder said inmates smashed windows were destroyed plumbing.

Earlier in the day, Gov. Doug Ducey toured the damage and ordered an investigation into the unrest at the Kingman prison. Arizona Department of Corrections Director Charles Ryan will lead the examination, according to Ducey's spokesman Daniel Scarpinato.

"Governor Ducey wants a full examination of what happened and what needs to be done to prevent this from happening again," he said.

The prison has been the scene of continuous rioting since Wednesday when several guards received minor injuries.

On Friday, Ryan ordered 700 inmates removed from the prison because the living quarters were not inhabitable, officials said. On Saturday, there was more unrest. The Department of Public Safety was called into to help quell the inmates while local police and sheriff's officials guarded the prison's perimeter. Tactical officers eventually took back the prison with tear gas and other methods, Wilder said.
