1 killed, 1 critically injured in multi-vehicle crash on Red Mountain Expressway westbound

TEMPE, Ariz. — Red Mountain Expressway westbound in Tempe has reopened after a deadly series of crashes earlier in the day.

The Arizona Department of Public Safety (DPS) said the crash happened Sunday just before 3 a.m.

One of the drivers involved in the crash, identified as 55-year-old Rachel Marie Moss from Chandler, died at the scene, DPS said.

DPS said three crashes happened along the roadway.

First, a white passenger vehicle rear-ended a gray Honda SUV.

Then after the collision, the gray Honda SUV was left blocking lanes of traffic and it was hit by a gray Audi passenger vehicle.

Finally, a gray Ford passenger vehicle struck the gray Audi passenger vehicle, the gray Honda SUV, and two occupants from the previous two collisions outside the vehicles.
