One of the vehicles was headed west on Baseline Road and making a left turn onto a private drive when it was hit by the other car, which was headed east on Baseline Road.
Two people had to be extricated from their vehicles and were rushed to the hospital in critical condition, the Phoenix Fire Department said. One of them, a woman identified as 27-year-old Samantha Starling, would later die at the hospital. She was a passenger in one of the vehicles.
The driver of one of the cars and one of his passengers are still in the hospital.
A third person suffered minor injuries and was treated at the scene by firefighters.
Police say they are still determining who was at fault for the crash and will know more after a reconstruction process is completed.
This is a developing story and more details will be added as they are made available.
