State Route 87 near Payson closed after deadly collision involving snowplow

PAYSON, Ariz. — One person has died after a vehicle they were traveling in collided with an ADOT snowplow near Payson.

Arizona Department of Public Safety said the incident happened Thursday on State Route 87 near State Route 60. State Route 87 is shut down in the area of the crash, DPS said. There is no estimated time to reopen the highway.

 DPS confirmed the person killed was the passenger in a vehicle that collided with the snowplow.

 Heavy snow was falling at the time of the collision, according to DPS. 

The snowplow driver was not injured.

ADOT offers the following safety tips when comes to snowplows.

  • Stay a safe distance behind the snowplow
  • Always stay at least four lengths back
  • Always respect the plow
  • Don’t pass a plow unless it pulls over
  • If you can’t see the plow driver, there’s a good chance the driver can’t see you
