Cleanup begins in Mesa after first major monsoon storm of 2018 rips through area

SRP said Tuesday morning that it had less than 8,000 custumers without power primarily in Mesa and Apache Junction due to power poles and lines being knocked down.

MESA, Ariz. - Thousands of people were without power early Tuesday morning after a monsoon storm ripped through Mesa on Monday.

Several power poles were snapped by the wind along Ellsworth, between Southern and Broadway.

SRP said Tuesday morning that it had less than 8,000 custumers without power primarily in Mesa and Apache Junction due to power poles and lines being knocked down.

The company said it was offering free bags of ice beginning at 9 a.m. at the QT at 1141 S. Crismon Road in Mesa.

The Valle del Oro retirement community also sustained damage from Monday's storm. Metal was ripped from several mobile homes and was still lying on the property on Tuesday morning.

The National Weather Service reported wind speeds of around 50 mph at weather stations near Ellsworth and the US-60. Rain gauges recorded about 1.10 inches of rain too.

The City of Mesa Transportation is handling cleanup around the city Tuesday. The Mesa Fire Department says there were no reported injuries.
