PHOENIX — The ball is now in Buc-ee's court.
Buc-ee's request for rezoning a 71-acre property west of Phoenix has been approved by the Goodyear Planning and Zoning Commission.
“I’m thrilled that Buc-ee’s is interested in Goodyear as a new location,” said Goodyear Mayor Joe Pizzillo. “It’s more than just a gas station or a convenience store. Buc-ee’s could provide our residents with what they’ve been asking for – which are more options – and that’s what they’ll get as our city continues to grow. It would be a popular stop for visitors in the Valley, including spring training fans.”
The proposed Goodyear travel center would have 120 fueling stations for passenger vehicles only with a convenience store measuring 23% larger than a football field. The store would bring more than 200 full-time jobs to the area, the company said, with starting pay beginning well above minimum wage, full benefits, a 6% matching 401k, and three weeks of paid vacation.
The company said it also often sources its products from local vendors and artisans to represent the local community.
“We are happy to hear of the city’s decision tonight. Buc-ee’s is continuing its process toward making Goodyear our first home in Arizona, and this was a really big step toward that goal,” said Stan Beard, Buc-ee’s director of Real Estate and Development.
The famous convenience store is expected to bring in 100,000 people every week, which is the same amount of people who currently live in Goodyear.
The traffic is a concern for residents. At the council meeting, officials discussed complaints from residents about the location turning into a huge stop for semi-trucks. Mayor Pizzillo made it clear that semi-trucks are not allowed at the proposed Buc-ee's.
This beaver-themed roadside mega center has captured the hearts and minds of Texans (and beyond) for over 40 years now.
And it's no surprise that it's so beloved; Buc-ee's is known for having the world's cleanest restrooms which, if you've ever road-tripped down I-10, is a godsend.
Add onto that an entire deli-style service counter for BBQ, beef jerky, fried food and baked goods and you can start to see why travelers will go the extra mile to stop here.
The sensational gas station saw a major boom in popularity since it started its aggressive expansion outside of Texas state lines, consumer outlet C-Store Drive reported. With the latest proposal, Buc-ee's is looking to capitalize on its all-in-one travel center approach.
The site is at the southeast corner of Bullard Avenue and Interstate 10.
There's no word on when construction on the new travel center might begin. 12News has reached out to Buc-ee's for information about their next steps but a spokesperson said they don't have any other information at this time.
