SURPRISE, Ariz. — A West Valley teen was killed in an accidental shooting on July 26, according to Surprise police

The department told 12News that officers were called to a shooting at a home near Bullard Avenue and Old Oak Lane just after midnight on July 26.

That area is just south of the intersection of Bullard Avenue and Waddell Road.

When officers got to the home, they were directed by family members to a bedroom, where they found the teen, a male, with a gunshot wound to the head.

Life-saving measures were attempted, but they were unsuccessful, and the teen died in the bedroom.

Investigators believe the teen mishandled a gun, causing it to accidentally go off.

A GoFundMe has been started for 17-year-old Chris Burphy Jr., a Willow Canyon High School graduate and former basketball player, who died at the same time as the accidental shooting.

Police did not officially identify the teen, as he is a juvenile, but when 12News asked police about Burphy's death the agency responded with info about the accidental shooting reported just after midnight on July 26.

The GoFundMe page states that Burphy was set to enlist in the Marines as soon as he turned 18 in November.

The page has raised more than $7,000 since it was created on Sunday. If you want to donate, click here.
