Child crushed by statue at Arizona Biltmore resort

Authorities say the child was taken to the hospital on Wednesday morning. Here's what we know.

A child was crushed by a statue at the Arizona Biltmore resort.

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — An 8-year-old boy is in extremely critical condition after a statue at the Arizona Biltmore Resort fell on him on Wednesday, authorities said. 

Phoenix fire crews responded to the scene around 9 a.m. One of the famous "Sprite" statues fell over and crushed the child, Phoenix fire told 12News. Phoenix Fire Captain Todd Keller said the boy has a head injury.

The statues are original parts of the Biltmore and were designed by Frank Lloyd Wright.

Keller said the incident is under investigation and Phoenix fire does not know what led up to the statue falling. 

The Arizona Biltmore gave 12News the following statement:

"Our top priority is the safety of our guests, and our thoughts are with the family impacted by today's events."
