Police identify woman killed in central Phoenix crash involving light rail and car

The driver of the car, later identified as 76-year-old Sandra Barbre, died at the hospital and the passenger is still in critical condition, police say.

PHOENIX — A woman is dead and another woman is injured following a crash in central Phoenix involving a light rail and a car, police said.

Phoenix police officers responded to the area of Washington Street and Interstate 10 late Saturday evening for a crash involving the light rail. When officers got to the scene, they found two women in the car that was involved in the crash. Both were taken to the hospital with serious injuries, police said.

The driver of the car, later identified as 76-year-old Sandra Barbre, was pronounced dead at the hospital. The passenger is still at the hospital and is listed as being in "critical condition," police said.

Based on preliminary information, police said Barbre crossed in front of the light rail, which was traveling west through an intersection on a green light, causing the crash.

Police are still investigating what led up to the crash and have not released any further details.
