PHOENIX — A child is the sole survivor of a car crash in west Phoenix, police said. It is still unclear the infant's relationship to the driver.
Phoenix police officers responded to the area of 83rd Avenue and McDowell Road regarding a car hitting into a tree at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday. When officers arrived, they found a man and a young child inside the car.
The child was in a car seat at the time of the crash and was transported to the hospital out of precaution, police said. The man, later identified as 51-year-old Paul Lopez, was treated at the scene for serious injuries, but did not survive. Lopez died at the scene, police said.
Preliminary information suggests Lopez was traveling south on 83rd Avenue when, for unknown reasons, he veered the vehicle into the raised median and struck a tree, police said.
The police said what led up to the crash is part of the ongoing investigation.
