PHOENIX — She is a towering figure in the game of women’s basketball and one of the most visible faces in the Valley.

Phoenix Mercury star Brittney Griner is being recognized for her dedication to the community and her resiliency after spending 10 months in a Russian prison.

Griner will be honored with the President’s Award from the NAACP Maricopa County Branch at the civil rights organization's annual Freedom Fund Dinner.

“We chose to honor Brittney for her outstanding service to the community and development of her non-profit organization,” said Dr. Karin Hardin, President NAACP Maricopa County Branch.

“She understands the importance of using her voice and platform to help those in need,” Hardin adds.

In 2016, Griner started the Heart And Sole shoe drive after seeing many in the unsheltered community walking around Phoenix without shoes.

Griner has also championed Americans held hostage overseas through the Bring Our Families Home campaign.

In February 2022, Griner was detained for 10 months in a Russian prison.

The event will be held Friday, April 26 at the Phoenix Shrine Event Center starting at 5:30 pm.

12News Anchor Jonathan McCall will serve as Master of Ceremonies for the event.

Since 1919, the Maricopa County Branch of the NAACP has fought for equality and civil rights issues in Maricopa County and Arizona.
