Gilbert police say man found in canal was an accidental drowning, no signs of trauma

Police found a man unresponsive in a canal just after 6:40 a.m. Saturday.

GILBERT, Ariz. — A man was found dead in a canal in Gilbert, the city police department reports.

A person called Gilbert police on Saturday around 7 a.m. and said there appeared to be a body floating in the canal near Lindsay and Baseline roads, Mesa police said. Gilbert police responded to the call initially, but Mesa police is taking over the investigation.

Gilbert police arrived and found a man in the water. Fire personnel removed the body from the water and the man was pronounced deceased at the scene, Mesa police said.

Police found clothes and a bike, which they say indicate the man may have gone into the water. Police said the incident is being investigated as a "suspicious death."

Police did not release the identity of the man or any other information.
