Bikes, bikes everywhere in Scottsdale

Several "dockless" bike sharing services allow users to leave their bikes at their destinations.

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. - The hottest trend in transportation might also be the most noticeable thing on every street corner in Old Town Scottsdale.

Bike sharing is turning into big business for several "dockless" services which allow users to leave their bikes at their destinations.

"Riders have the freedom to take the bikes wherever they want and leave them wherever they want," saID Erik Hultquist with LimeBike.

The unintended consequence of giving users the freedom to leave bikes anywhere is that some bikes are turning up in places they aren't supposed to be.

The Scottsdale Police Department tells 12 News they have received numerous complaints from residents who have seen bikes left on their property. Other bikes are being left in places like the canal, crosswalks, and seemingly abandoned on random corners throughout the Valley.

"Team members will go pick the bikes up. We use a transit van, and they will bring the bike right back to where it needs to go," Hultquist said.

Each LimeBike is equipped with GPS so the company knows where they are at all times. Hultquist says a team of about 20 people drives around the Valley to pick up strays everyday.

Despite the complaints, LimeBike is expanding it service to other cities like Mesa, which recently announced a partnership with the company.
