AVONDALE, Ariz. — An Avondale community is left picking up the pieces after St. William Catholic Church was almost destroyed by a devastating fire and they need help rebuilding.
The church, located near 107th Avenue and Buckeye Road, caught fire around 1 a.m. on May 1. Firefighters worked to contain the blaze for several hours, but it was ultimately a total loss, Avondale Fire Battalion Chief Steve Mayhew told 12News.
"While the official cause of the fire is still being determined, an outpouring of calls from people wanting to help the community rebuild have been flooding into the parish and the Diocese of Phoenix," the Diocese said in a statement. "While the St. William Parish was fully insured, funds raised will assist the staff and community to address unknown expenses and needs which are not covered by insurance."

Since the building was a church, officials say that there will be a significant investigation into the fire. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.
