'Bundle of fireworks' found on Valley light rail platorm ends in police making arrest

The suspect allegedly admitted to bringing a bundle of fireworks onto the light rail platform in central Phoenix.

PHOENIX — An arrest has been made after Phoenix police responded to reports of possible explosives being found under a bench on a Valley Metro light rail platform.

On Jan. 23 at about noon, officers were dispatched to the platform near 24th and Jefferson streets to locate a device that had been described as "sticks of dynamite."

Light rail service was shut down and the platform was evacuated as the suspicious device was removed by the city's bomb squad. Rail service resumed a couple of hours later.

Court records show the device was relocated and disassembled, revealing that it contained "explosive powders."

Police utilized facial recognition software to help investigators identify 20-year-old Luis Arrona as a possible suspect.

In an interview with police, the young man allegedly admitted to bringing a "bundle of fireworks" onto the light rail platform but couldn't remember whether he left them there, court records show.

The suspect could now be facing a charge of disorderly conduct with a weapon.
