PHOENIX — Women in Arizona are proving that there is a job in the construction industry for everyone.
Adilene Bueno, Stacy Harden and Nicole Romaine all work in the industry and said these jobs are available for the taking.
“My dad and I did construction projects growing up, and he started at the bottom but ended on the roof but just seeing it go from dirt to something is intriguing,” Romaine, a scheduling coordinator at Taylor Morrison, said.
The women are getting in at the ground level and building a career along with new skylines across the country. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, women make up about 11% of the U.S. Construction Industry.
“It’s great that at Taylor Morrison, we have a female CEO who’s leading the charge to put women at the forefront, with 44% of our workforce being women,” Harden, a division cadence manager for the company, said.
Local construction management firm GCON told 12News that just 10 years ago, women made up just 2.6% of the construction industry. Now, about 1 million women are helping shape the future of the industry and getting promoted within it.
"I’ve been with Taylor Morrison for six years and been promoted four times," Harden said. "I started as a customer service rep and over time, became a cadence manager."
Women are expected to continue to get promoted within the industry. Right now, 33% of women in the industry are "climbing the ladder" and since 2019, construction roles have seen a 185% uptick in female positions, according to Taylor Morrison.
"Best advice, be strong and diligent, never be intimidated, there's a job in this industry for everyone," Bueno, a superintendent with the company, said.
