PHOENIX — Not every Arizona Republican is voting red in the 2024 presidential election.
"One of the biggest reasons I’m voting for Kamala Harris, and I would’ve voted for Joe Biden is that they’re not Donald Trump," Mesa Mayor John Giles said.
"We are here to send a clear message," Robin Shaw, co-chair of Republicans for Harris said, "Arizonans are rejecting Donald Trump and his failed leadership.”
Notable Grand Canyon state Republicans like Mayor Giles, former Arizona state representative Robin Shaw, and former Scottsdale Mayor Sam Campana all gave their endorsements to Harris rather than the former president.
It’s a path that can be fraught: Republicans around the country who have come out against the former president dealing with primary opponents, negative ads, even death threats.
“Another Trump term with JD Vance would be far worse and would lead our country down a path that I don't think we could ever recover from," Campana stated.
Several Republicans supporting Harris spoke out two years ago to oppose “MAGA” candidates in the 2022 elections.
Mayor Giles believes Harris will advocate for middle-class Americans, make sure billionaires pay their share of taxes and secure the southern border.
“I know that she will work in good faith with Republicans in Congress to address a congressional legislative fix to our broken border and immigration system.”
Shaw said she voted for Trump in the past and won't do it again.
“I regret that vote.”
The three questioned the former president's character and ethics. Calling on Republicans to choose country over party and truth over lies.
"Those experiences shaped my vision for a better Arizona," Campana added. "One that prioritizes environmental stewardship, cultural enrichment, and strong community values.”
Arizona GOP Chairwoman Gina Swoboda issued the following statement in response to the endorsements, "The Mayor has been endorsing Democrats for several election cycles now — this isn’t news and it certainly doesn’t warrant any of our attention. At the AZGOP, we are focused on expanding support and addressing issues that matter most to Arizonans and the American people. We are here to win and we will spend our time advocating for policies that help working people, the middle-class, and lift all boats on a rising tide with the policies advocated by the Trump Vance ticket.”
