And one of those awesome photographers is right here in Arizona.
According to Time magazine, Instagram user and Arizona resident donjay is one of the 51 Instagram photographers to follow in the United States.
With the news of this national honor, we caught up with Arizona's amazing photographer to talk about photography and the popular photo app.
How does it feel to be recognized by Time?
I know so many amazing photographers, it always blows my mind like, “Why me?” It is a humbling honor.
When did you start taking photos?
I started a little bit in high school, but I didn’t stick with it. It wasn’t until Instagram that I got serious. I joined Instagram in 2011, about four months after it launched. The more engaged I was with the platform, and the more amazing photography I was exposed to, I started getting more interested in photography, becoming more creative.
Do you have any official training?
Other than the two classes in high school, no. Having shot with an iPhone for a while, I just got used to the settings and became familiar with what makes a good photo. Then I learned about all the different functions and terminology of the camera later.
What do you use now to take your photos?
I used my iPhone for many years, until 2014. Now I use a Sony a7II camera along with my phone.
What is your favorite thing/place to photograph?
Wide open spaces. Anything where you can see great distances. I like seeing the scale of a scene. I also enjoy shooting people these days too. When I first started, I focused more on landscapes and other objects. Now I love adding people in my shots.
What makes a good photo?
I don’t think there is one thing that makes a good photo. I see so much variety and follow so many good photographers, that they all inspire me. Everyone has their own unique perspective that makes a photo stand out.
Do you have any advice to give to amateur photographers?
If I was talking to someone young or just starting out, I would say begin with your phone. You can do a lot with your phone these days because you are limited on the adjustments and can just focus on the composition.
How has Instagram helped your photography career?
It has helped a ton. I am extremely thankful to Instagram People at the company have selected me twice to be a "suggested user" in the app. That notoriety has exposed me to a number of people that I would not of been able to reach without their recognition. It is a big honor.
What is the best thing you like about Instagram?
The community. It’s not just a collection of pictures, the photography is inspiring and
I am inspired daily. The commenting and the encouragement along with the fact that I have friends around the planet is amazing.
If you want to keep up with this great photographer and all of his adventures, be sure to follow donjay on Instagram.
