Airport workers walk out, go on strike at Sky Harbor ahead of busy travel weekend

According to a release, workers employed by SSP America walked out on strike Tuesday morning in protest of numerous alleged labor law violations.

PHOENIX — Concession workers at Sky Harbor Airport are now on strike as many people head out ahead of the Thanksgiving holiday.

According to a release, workers employed by SSP America walked out on strike Tuesday morning in protest of numerous alleged labor law violations. The Union has filed numerous pending charges with the National Labor Relations Board against SSP America.

The unfair labor practice charges filed with the NLRB stemmed from allegations that SSP America attempted to automate certain positions by using QR codes and self-serve kiosks. This activity allegedly threatened work opportunities from employees, without negotiating with the union.

Along with those charges, SSP America has also allegedly failed to provide requested information regarding their attempts to resolve any alleged vermin issues and the company’s hiring and promotion practices.

SSP America is a subcontractor with the City of Phoenix, and employs more than 400 workers at Sky Harbor Airport.  Workers at SSP voted to authorize a strike on Sept. 1 walked out on a one-day strike on Oct. 25.
