CHANDLER, Ariz. — Two new affordable housing communities will soon be built in Chandler after the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors approved the $10 million in funding needed for the projects.
When complete, the new communities will be able to house more than 400 low-income families. Funding comes from Maricopa County's American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) dollars.
"Finding a safe and affordable place to call home is difficult right now," Vice Chairman Jack Sellers of District 1 said. "Many people cannot afford to live in the communities where they work. I’m very pleased that by partnering with the City of Chandler we will help create housing opportunities for working families struggling in today’s market.”
The first of the two projects is South Hamilton. $5 million of the funds will be used to build an affordable housing rental community on 7.4 acres near South Hamilton Street and East Commonwealth Avenue in Chandler. This community will be for senior housing and will have an estimated 300 rental units.
South Hamilton will have a community room with non-profit agencies on site to serve senior populations.
The rest of the $5 million in funding will go towards building the Villas on McQueen, a 157-unit community near North McQueen Road and East Chandler Boulevard, which will serve households earning at or below 60% of the area median income. This community will be for seniors, families, veterans and those with disabilities.
Services that will be available for residents including youth activities, senior services, as well as employment and career training opportunities.
"Since housing costs are unlikely to decrease to pre-pandemic levels, Maricopa County is funding housing solutions to help income-qualified households keep pace with rising rents," said Clint Hickman, Chairman of the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors, District 4. “This project with the City of Chandler will provide affordable housing options and revitalize vacant parcels of land.”
There is no given timeline as to when the projects may be completed.
