MESA, Ariz. — Five Mesa employees and two program participants were taken to the hospital after a "chemical incident" in Mesa, authorities said. The pool at the Brimhall Aquatic Center in Mesa will remain closed through Friday, authorities said.

Mesa Fire and Medical crews arrived at the scene of a HAZMAT situation at the Brimhall Aquatic Complex on Southern Avenue in Mesa. Authorities said sodium bicarbonate and bleach were mixed, and the mixture created was "off-gassing," or giving off a chemical in gaseous form.

The area has been evacuated, authorities said. Seven people were taken to the hospital.

The pool at Brimhall will remain closed through Friday as crews continue to clean up. The Brimhall campus will reopen tomorrow and Mesa Park and Recreation camp activities will resume at the school.

The Dive-In movie night scheduled on June 7 will be postponed until June14, authorities said.
