Valley teens jump into action after witnessing a driver crash during a medical emergency

The teens were waiting for others to finish a bike ride when they saw a car that rolled to a stop in the wrong lane of traffic.

PHOENIX — When the Chaparral High mountain bike team went to the Phoenix Mountain Preserve for a ride, they never imagined they would end up helping in a rescue.

While at the preserve, one of the team members, Mason Ulepic, saw a car roll to a stop in the wrong lane and knew something wasn't right. Ulepic and his friend Noah Grace just finished a long bike ride with their teammates and were in a car waiting for the others to finish.

"Her car is just idling, and it idles up the curb. And I walked up and, like, looked in the window, and she was just eyes rolled back, just like shaking,” Ulepic said.

Their first call was to 911. The second was to their coach, Ken Clark, who was still on the trail.

"911 was just like, 'Don't try to do anything like, right now'.”

It was hard for the kids and their coach not to help in some way.

“All the coaches with the league we're in have some medical training so that if something happens out on the trail there, we can help the kids,” Clark said.

The car was locked, so Clark grabbed a rock and broke the back window but he was too big to fit through.

Grace was much smaller at only 14 and was able to crawl through the window.

"I like, got wrapped in the blanket, and I crawled through and I started trying to, like, wake her up,” Grace said. “I think the scariest part was, like, the only thing, because we were at the top of a hill over there, the only thing stopping us from rolling down was her foot on the brake.”

The fire department and paramedics arrived at the scene to take over.

The team doesn't know what happened to the driver after that. But when most people would've stood back, these kids stepped up. 12News asked the Phoenix Fire Department for details, but the department didn't respond.

"Yeah, it was, it was really crazy.”
