2 people dead following 'extremely violent' crash in Tempe, driver arrested

Speed and impairment appear to be contributing factors, police say.

TEMPE, Ariz. — Two people are dead after a car driving up to 150 mph crashed in Tempe early Saturday morning, police said.

Tempe police officers responded to the area of Rural and Broadway roads at approximately 1:30 a.m. on Saturday for a single-vehicle crash. Police said during their preliminary investigation, they found that one car was driving south on Rural Road, just past Broadway Road, when it crossed multiple lanes of traffic. The car then hit a fixed object, police said.

The car had two passengers in it, both of whom were ejected from the vehicle and died, police said. One passenger died at the scene and the second passenger died at the local hospital, according to police.

Investigators described the collision as being "extremely violent."

The driver, identified as 32-year-old Derek Glasscock, was evaluated at the scene and police said both impairment and speed appeared to be contributing factors.

Glasscock allegedly told police he had multiple drinks at a Tempe bar earlier that evening and admitted he should not have been driving.

Court records show investigators calculated the car's speed reaching 153 mph as the driver started to lose control.

Glasscock has been booked into jail and is facing felony charges, police said.

The deceased passengers have been identified as 31-year-old Maria Rangel and 32-year-old Jesse Ruiz.
