2 dead, 1 injured following south Phoenix shooting

The shooting occurred near 19th and Southern avenues around 2:45 a.m. Saturday, Phoenix police say.

PHOENIX — Two men are dead and a third has life-threatening injuries after a shooting in south Phoenix, the city's police said.

Phoenix police officers responded to the area of 19th Avenue and Roeser Road around 2:45 a.m. on Saturday for reports of a shooting. When officers got to the scene, they found two men who had been shot. One of them, identified as 19-year-old Elijah Sanchez, died at the scene. The other, identified as 38-year-old Lucio Lopez Segura, was taken to a nearby hospital where he died.

A third man who had been shot was found nearby. He was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. He remains in the hospital in critical condition as of Saturday evening, according to Phoenix police.

Officers also found a fourth person who was not hurt near the scene and determined he was involved in the shooting.

Police say their investigation shows that Sanchez, Segura and the two other men were all involved in a fight that led to the shooting and the deaths of Sanchez and Segura and the injury to the third man, who has not been identified.

The fourth man was taken into custody at the scene and interviewed by detectives but has been released.

Police are continuing to investigate this shooting.
