A serious crash on the Loop 303 killed one person and hospitalized two others Friday morning, the Arizona Department of Transportation said.
Traffic across all lanes was blocked south of Happy Valley Road as emergency crews responded.
Investigators say a passenger car heading southbound crossed into northbound traffic, hitting a pickup head on.
The driver of the car was flown to the hospital and later pronounced dead.
"The driver of the pickup truck sustained (a) minor injury," a DPS statement said. "The passenger in the pickup truck sustained a non-life-threatening, lower-torso injury and was flown to John C Lincoln North Mountain Hospital."
The pickup was towing a trailer with landscaping equipment.
Police said a trauma nurse was on-scene and provided help to the crash victims and assisted emergency crews.
