Driver attempts to leave the scene after deadly Phoenix crash, police say

PHOENIX — A man has died after an early morning crash in Phoenix, according to authorities.

The Phoenix Police Department said the crash happened Saturday at around 6 a.m. near 58th Avenue and Encanto Boulevard.

Officers arrived and found the driver of one of the vehicles with serious injuries. They tried to help the man but he was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

His name has not been released.

The driver of a second vehicle involved in the crash was detained, police said.

"The adult male driver of the other vehicle involved took off on foot from the area prior to police arrival," police said in a news release.

Investigators were able to identify the individual and detain him, police said.

The road is expected to be closed for an extended period as the crash is investigated.
