1 dead, 3 injured in crash near South Mountain

The deceased driver has been identified as a 65-year-old man, Phoenix police said.

PHOENIX — A motorist is dead after experiencing a medical emergency Thursday, resulting in them losing control of their car and crashing near South Mountain, police said.

Four people were in a vehicle which allegedly lost control then rolled over, injuring all of the occupants. The driver was pronounced dead on the scene and has been identified as 65-year-old Randy Stover, police said.

The three occupants, two adults and one teenager, were taken to the hospital for non-life-threatening injuries. Police said it appears Stover experienced a medical episode while driving north on Central Avenue before the vehicle crashed.

Police said the investigation is ongoing.

What is the Valley?:

“The Valley” is what locals call the Phoenix Metropolitan Area. It is considered the largest metropolitan area in the Southwest.

The Valley is made up of various major cities other than Phoenix, including:

  • Mesa

  • Chandler

  • Scottsdale

  • Tempe

  • Glendale

  • Surprise

  • Peoria

  • Gilbert

  • El Mirage

  • Avondale

  • Litchfield Park

  • Goodyear

  • Buckeye

Whether a city is in the “East Valley” or “West Valley” depends on where it is in relation to Phoenix.

The cities of the Valley have a combined population of 4,845,832 people, according to the 2020 United States Census. This makes it the 11th largest metropolitan area in the country right behind the Boston and Atlanta areas.
