A man died in a shooting at a house party in south Phoenix. Police say he could have been a bystander.

Police say it is unknown whether the man who died was being shot at or if he was caught in the crossfire.

PHOENIX — A man is dead following a shooting in Phoenix, the city's police department said.

Phoenix police officers responded to a shooting call in the front yard of a home near Baseline and 35th Avenue around 4:30 a.m. on Sunday. 

When officers got to the scene, they found a man with at least one gunshot wound who was dead. The man was identified as 26-year-old Gabriel Gillespie. 

Several witnesses told police the shooting stemmed from a party at a rental house near the scene. 

Homicide investigators responded, conducted interviews, canvased for surveillance video, and processed the scene, police said.

Police said there were two different shooting scenes and evidence confirmed two suspects were shooting at each other.  

It is unknown if Gillespie was shot at intentionally or was caught in crossfire, police said. One suspect has been identified as 19-year-old Kason Nelson, who is facing charges related to weapons violations and unlawful discharge of a firearm.

No other information was given.
