More than 120 guns found in home of man accused of shooting at DNC office in Tempe, officials say

Tempe police announced the arrest on Tuesday evening. Investigators reported finding several guns and ammunition in the suspect's possession.

TEMPE, Ariz. — A man has been arrested in connection with three separate shooting incidents targeting the Democratic National Committee office in Tempe as well as hanging suspicious bags of white powder from several political signs in Ahwatukee.

Police identified him as 60-year-old Jeffrey Michael Kelly.

Kelly is facing three felony counts of terrorism acts, two counts of shooting at a residential structure and two counts of unlawful discharge in connection with the suspected shootings, Tempe police said.

Tempe police said the DNC campaign office was first hit with gunfire in September.

During Kelly's initial appearance before a judge, prosecutors claimed investigators had reportedly found more than 120 guns, 250,000 rounds of ammunition, body armor, grenade launcher and a machine gun in the suspect's possession.

The suspect's behavior has been escalating, the prosecutor told the court, making him a potential threat to the community.

Kelly's attorney said the suspect is a sportsman who legally possesses the firearms.

Court records show that on July 19 the suspect allegedly searched online a street address on Southern Avenue that is the same address as the DNC office in Tempe.

The first incident at the DNC office occurred on Sept. 16 at 12:09 a.m. and the second occurred on Sept. 23 at 12:35 a.m.

On Oct. 6, the campaign office near Southern Avenue and Priest Drive was hit by gunfire at around 12:30 a.m.

Kelly was also arrested for his alleged involvement in hanging suspicious bags of white powder from several political signs lined with razor blades that the suspect posted in Ahwatukee, police said.

Police said they will hold a press conference to release additional details on Oct. 23 at 4 p.m. at the Tempe Police Department Apache substation.

The judge ordered a $500,000 cash bond for Kelly and ordered that the suspect be under house arrest if he posts bond.

Kelly's attorney argued against that amount, saying he had no prior record and possessed a high-level security clearance from his job as an aerospace engineer.
