Resident escapes Phoenix apartment fire

Crews who responded to a west Phoenix apartment fire on Saturday said a resident told them there were no working smoke alarms in the two-story building.
An apartment unit that caught fire Saturday in west Phoenix had no smoke alarms, officials said.

Crews who responded to a west Phoenix apartment fire on Saturday said a resident told them there were no working smoke alarms in the two-story building.

The fire started at about 1 p.m. inside a unit at 39th Avenue and Encanto Boulevard, Phoenix Fire Capt. Aaron Ernsberger said.

No injuries were reported.

"Fortunately one of the residents who was at home at the time of the fire was able to escape safely without injury," he said.

He said crews had to use multiple fire hoses to extinguish the flames and perform a search for potential victims.

"Fire crews kept the fire from spreading to the other units in the complex and preventing further losses," he said.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, Ernsberger said.
